Preamble
In any just discourse, it is a universally accepted principle that the burden of proof lies with the one making a claim. The claim that "God does not exist" has never been proven through reason or logic. On the other hand, belief in the existence (wujūd) and oneness (tawḥīd) of Allah (SWT) stands at the summit of human consciousness. It is the fundamental truth that governs the moral compass of every human being—because all, willingly or unwillingly, are drawn to worship the One who created and sustains them.
Islam encourages its followers to reflect, reason, and arrive at faith through contemplation—not blind imitation. What follows are just a few of the many compelling reasons for belief in the existence of God.
1. The Limits of Physical Senses Mislead Atheists
The atheist error lies in limiting all knowledge to what can be sensed physically, while Allah (SWT) is beyond the confines of space and time. A human being is not merely a body; each person also possesses a soul—a non-physical essence that animates life.
The existence of things like the soul or even the mind or thought cannot be empirically touched or seen. Does that mean they don’t exist? Of course not. Similarly, the inability to physically detect Allah (SWT) does not negate His reality.
His presence is like the trademark of a Creator, etched into the human soul.
2. Nothing Comes into Existence Without a Maker
Everything with purpose and order must have a creator. Even a newborn baby instinctively cries to signal hunger or discomfort—this behavior has intention and design.
A house does not build itself through chaos or accident. It needs an architect, laborers, and materials. So too, the universe, with its countless galaxies, perfectly tuned laws, and complex biological systems, could not have come from a blind, unguided explosion.
If there is design, there must be a Designer. If there is intelligence, there must be an Intellect.
A Reality Check
Atheists avoid belief in God not because the evidence is lacking, but because they do not want to confront the purpose of their own creation—a purpose only known through Divine Revelation.
Just as a manufacturer provides an instruction manual and support agents for its product, Allah (SWT) has sent prophets and books to guide mankind.
And the abuse or ignorance of so-called religious leaders does not invalidate the truth of religion itself—especially the belief in the One, Merciful, and Wise Creator.
3. The Law of Cause and Effect
If you see animal footprints in fresh snow, you don’t need to see the animal—you know it was there. This is the principle of cause and effect.
Apply this to the universe: if the “Big Bang” was the cause, what caused the Big Bang?
This chain of causality cannot go back infinitely. It must end in a First Cause—One who is uncaused, eternal, and self-sufficient. In Islam, we call this cause Allah (SWT).
According to our faith, Allah (SWT) created a light, called Nūr-e-Muhammadi, which became the first created entity and the basis of the rest of creation.
4. Is It Worth a 50% Risk of Hell?
Let’s consider two possibilities:
a) If God does not exist:
Then believers and disbelievers alike will not be held accountable. No heaven, no hell.
b) If God does exist:
Then believers will be rewarded with Paradise, and disbelievers may face the torment of Hell, as warned in all revealed books.
Which scenario is wiser to prepare for?
The rational answer: believe—because belief costs nothing, but denial risks everything.
Belief in God also fosters moral behavior, prevents corruption, and gives inner strength. It becomes a cure for anxiety, depression, and spiritual discontent.
5. Human Beings Are Vulnerable and Dependent
Can a person drowning in the ocean, surrounded by sharks, truly say they don’t believe in God?
In moments of ultimate despair, even the most defiant heart cries out to the Divine. As the Qur’an states (Q 31:32), those caught in a storm at sea turn sincerely to Allah. This instinct is not taught—it is built into the human soul.
6. God’s Attributes Elevate the Human Mind and Soul
Though Allah’s (SWT) attributes are beyond human likeness, they are a source of intellectual and spiritual refinement.
Genetics reveals His Knowledge
Earthquakes and storms reveal His Power
Nature and beauty reflect His Design
As the intellect matures—especially around puberty—every thinking soul begins asking: Who am I? Where did I come from? Why am I here? These questions lead to Allah.
The Prophet Muhammad (SA) said:
Say with conviction: There is no deity except Allah—and you will succeed.
Imam ‘Ali’s sermons in Nahjul Balaghah beautifully articulate these truths.
7. God’s Ways Are Different from Ours
When people face suffering—death, disaster, injustice—they often question God’s mercy. But our perception is not reality.
For the person of faith, calamity refines character.
For the person of complaint, it breeds despair.
Allah (SWT) is Perfect. He creates everything purposefully, including trials.
8. Denial of God is the Height of Ingratitude
We eat, breathe, live, and die using Allah’s (SWT) provisions. Yet some deny His existence.
To reject the One who gave us everything—including life itself—is not just illogical, it is a form of moral failure and spiritual arrogance.
